European Markets for Wound Dressings and Wound Cleansing and Debridement Products

There have been a number of dramatic advances in wound management over the past two decades. These include the recognition of the costs associated with treating wounds, earlier recognition of the risk factors associated with the development of wounds, and technological advances in the products used to treat wounds. These product developments have in turn led to the creation and market entry of new and innovative solutions for wound management, greatly improving clinicians’ ability to overcome many previously irresolvable problems and issues associated with the treatment of acute and chronic wounds. The clinical benefits of these advances are more rapid wound healing and reduced scarring, both of which improve patient outcomes and improve quality of life.

In parallel with these advances, the population is gaining awareness regarding the factors that contribute to the increased prevalence of wounds, including the aging of the population, the increased incidence of diabetes and obesity, and growing antibiotic resistance. These factors contribute to rising costs associated with the provision of healthcare throughout the European countries covered by this report [France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom (U.K.)]. As a result, cost pressures within individual European healthcare systems have become major political and economic issues. As nations in the region strive to provide their populations with the best care possible in a cost-conscious environment, European healthcare authorities have focused on providing alternative care sites for elderly patients and those with chronic conditions. This focus has resulted in a regional increase in the construction of long-term and rehabilitative care facilities, and the establishment of community-based programs and home care agencies, creating opportunities for wound management products suppliers to enter new or expanded markets.

The challenge to these companies lies in bridging the gap between the aging populations’ high-technology medical product requirements and national governments’ healthcare spending reduction requirements. As a result, there is increased pressure for companies to demonstrate their products’ cost effectiveness and efficacy.
