Germany, Surgical Procedure Volumes

Of Germany’s 80.2 million population, the number of those age 65 and older comprise an estimated 20.9%. Due mainly to declining birth rates, the country’s population is not expected to experience much (if any) growth over the coming years; however, the older population is expected to expand and by the year 2020, it is estimated that 23.0% of the population of Germany will be age 65 and older. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, 11.3% of Germany’s gross domestic product was spent on healthcare in 2011.

This report presents an overview of selected medical specialties and the number of surgical procedures performed for selected diseases/disorders in the European Union country of Germany.
