European Markets for Heart Valve Repair and Replacement Products
The four chambers of the human heart are connected by four flap-like valves, which allow blood to flow from one chamber to another while simultaneously preventing backwash. The proper functioning of these valves is essential to the one-way flow of blood through the heart and the efficiency of the heart’s pumping capability. Unlike congenital valve disorders, which usually manifest themselves shortly after birth, acquired (or age-related) valve disorders typically produce few symptoms until damage to the heart is advanced and the patient is facing the removal of a blood clot, a serious form of arrhythmia, or heart failure; at that point, after confirmation by imaging techniques such as echocardiography and cardiac catheterization, surgery may be considered. Defective heart valves may be replaced or repaired using openheart, minimally invasive, or catheter-based techniques.
