Disease Incidence and Prevalence: Europe, Japan, Russian Federation and Australia

This report is divided into two distinct chapters: the first chapter contains information, including etiology, for the world’s major diseases. The disease categories covered are:

•Cancer;
•Cardiac and cardiovascular diseases;
• Respiratory diseases;
• Neurologic and psychiatric diseases and disorders;
• Metabolic diseases;
• Reproductive and genitourinary disorders;
• Blood disorders;
• Ophthalmologic diseases;
• Musculoskeletal diseases; and,
• Human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

The second chapter provides disease statistics and demographic information for 20 countries, including the major European countries, the Russian Federation, Japan and Australia. The profile for each country includes socio-economic indicators and health statistics, including the latest available incidence, prevalence, and discharge statistics for each country’s major disease
types. As reliable data was not always available, the demographic and statistical information for each disease category is not comprehensive across countries.

Many federal and non-profit organizations were contacted in order to gather data for this report: only the most up-to-date information is included in the statistical sections and exhibits. The major source for current incidence and prevalence information was the World Health Organization, and discharge information was obtained from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris, France. Other sources, such as proprietary data from Medical Data International’s internal resources, were also utilized. In some cases, the data presented from a specific source may not be consistent with data obtained from other sources. Medical Data International has made every attempt to validateand present accurate and current information. However, in cases of discrepancies which could not be reconciled, the data is presented as originally gathered.
