U.S. Markets for Cardiovascular and Cardiothoracic Surgery Devices

The overall cardiovascular surgery products market encompasses equipment, instruments, disposables, and prostheses for the performance of open-heart surgery, as well as cardiac assist devices that are used to support patients following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and other major cardiac interventions. Examples of the devices used in these procedures include oxygenators, heart-lung machines, cardioplegia kits, intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs), ventricular assist devices, prosthetic grafts, and heart valves.

The combined sales of cardiovascular surgery products exceeded $1.2 billion in 1998, of which 46% were open-heart and minimally invasive cardiac surgery products, 27% were heart valves and valve repair devices, 14% were prosthetic grafts and patches, and 13% were cardiac assist products. The distribution of total market share between segments is expected to shift considerably through the year 2003 as the overall market increases to approximately $2.4 billion by the year 2003. Due to a downturn in the number of open-heart surgery procedures, these products will decline 3.6% annually through the forecast period covered by this report, despite rapid gains in minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery (MICS) products and, in the short term, transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) devices. Heart valves and annuloplasty rings will enjoy moderate growth rates, especially those that facilitate the use of minimally invasive techniques. The most significant increases through the year 2003 will be in the cardiac assist product and prosthetic graft market segments, due to ventricular assist devices (VADs) providing a permanent solution for patients with cardiac failure, and as endovascular stent-grafts reduce the risks of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair and enable prophylactic treatment.
