The principal function of blood is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues and then to return carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs. This function can be compromised by blood loss, or subjection of the blood to external manipulations such as cardiopulmonary bypass. In addition, there are numerous blood disorders and conditions
that require the use of therapeutic agents for blood and blood component regulation. These conditions include anemia, coagulation disorders, hemopoietic and lymphoreticular malignancies, myelodysplastic disease, myeloproliferative disease, paraproteinemia, platelet disorders, and red blood cell (RBC) disorders. These conditions may be inherited or may develop as a result of chemotherapy or an immunological condition.
