Ophthalmic Surgical Products Market

At $7.5bn, the ophthalmic surgical products market is one of the largest medical device markets in the world and serves an important need: preventing blindness for millions of people who suffer from cataracts, glaucoma, vitreoretinal disease, and refractive errors. The market includes a large number of sophisticated energy-based (eg phacoemulsification [“phaco”] and femtosecond laser-based) surgical systems to safely and efficiently emulsify cataracts, and laser systems to treat glaucoma, vitreoretinal disease, or correct vision in elective laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) procedures. The market also includes intraocular lenses (IOLs), which are used in conjunction with ophthalmic surgical systems during cataract surgery to replace the cloudy lens, as well as lucrative disposable devices/instruments and other products.

Due to the fact that untreated cataracts and glaucoma are the leading causes of avoidable blindness in the world (with cataracts causing the majority of blindness cases, at 51%, followed by glaucoma, at 8%, the products outlined in this report represent an important medical devices market that will only grow in size as the global population ages and vision-saving treatment is expanded to regions outside the US and other developed countries, where treatment is severely lacking.
