Cataract Surgery Products

A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the eye, which results in blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light. More than 90 million people worldwide are afflicted with blindness or moderate-to-severe vision impairment as a result of cataracts. In 2022, sales of cataract surgery products totaled more than $5bn, with intraocular lenses (IOLs) accounting for the vast majority of sales.

Market drivers include the aging of the population and associated increase in the prevalence of cataracts, technological advancements leading to improved patient outcomes and increased reimbursement, increasing access to modern cataract surgery techniques in developing markets, and increased demand for premium devices. Limiters to this market include high out-of-pocket costs for premium products, intense competition leading to downward pricing pressure, and future competition from cataract-preventing pharmaceuticals.

This analysis includes a discussion of products, current/forecast markets, competitors, and opportunities in the global markets for cataract surgery products including IOLs, phacoemulsification systems, and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery systems, as well as associated accessories and services for these devices. Countries covered by this report include the US, five major European markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK), Japan, and the Rest of World. The forecast range for this report is 2022–27.
